DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
- Permit holder can transport rifle, shotgun, pistol, etc. uncased and loaded in vehicle upon a public highway.
- Firearm still needs to be unloaded and enclosed in a carry case when operating or riding a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle.
- A person still cannot possess a handgun while bow hunting “unless that person also has a valid deer hunting license and an unfilled transportation tag that permits a handgun to be used to take deer.”
DISQUALIFIERS
- Under age 18 for Professional Permit
- Under age 21 for Non-professional permit
- Alcohol addiction
- Misdemeanor assault convictions (non-DV) committed within prior three years, except those involving a firearm or explosive
- Intent-assault involving firearm-lifetime disqualifier
- Aggravated assault –lifetime disqualifier
- Serious assault w/weapon – not disqualifier at all
- Federal possession disqualifiers
Handgun Permit Renewal Process
RENEWAL PROCESS 1
- Attend a refresher course (about 1-2 hours)
- File your renewal paperwork with your score not less than 30 days prior to expiration
- Pay $25 dollars at the Sheriff’s Office
RENEWAL PROCESS 2
- Qualification on a range
- File your renewal paperwork with your score, not less than 30 days prior to expiration
- Pay $25 dollars at the Sheriff’s Office
RENEWAL PROCESS 3
- If you miss the 30 day deadline you will need to do the following
- Apply as a new applicant showing proof of training
- Pay $50.00 at the Sheriff’s Office
THE FOLLOWING TRAINING CAN BE ACCEPTED
- Certified I.L.E.A. Firearms Instructor (Comparable out of state instructor)
- Certified N.R.A. Handgun Safety Instructor
- Special authorization from DPS
- Small arms training provided by US Armed Forces
TRAINING TIME FRAME
- A new applicant simply has to show he/she has completed training by one of the approved instructors.
- Training could have occurred 30 years ago and it will be accepted
CASUAL ENCOUNTER
- Verification of Permit
- Casual Encounter to verify they possess a valid permit to carry weapons
RECIPROCITY
- State of Iowa will recognize all other states that issue a carry permit
NO WEAPONS ALLOWED
- Business’s posting signs at the front door stated no weapons allowed
- Not addressed in the Iowa Firearms law
- Need to be asked to leave
- If refuse to leave then a trespassing charge but no weapon violation unless other circumstances are present
FEES
- New Permit = $50.00 (paper permit) + ($10.00 if you want Photo Card) Total $60.00
- Renewal Permit = $25 (paper permit) + ($10.00 if you want Photo Card) Total $35.00
- Duplicate permit = $25.00 (paper permit) + ($10.00 if you want Photo Card) Total $35.00
- Photo ID Card = $10.00 extra (Photo ID optional)
