Who May Register To Vote

Before you can vote in Iowa, you must be registered. To register to vote in Iowa, you must:

  • be a citizen of the United States
  • be a resident of Iowa
  • be at least 17 - 1/2 years old
    (you must be 18 to vote)
  • not have been convicted of a felony
    (unless your rights have been restored)
  • not currently be judged "incompetent" to vote by a court
  • give up your right to vote in any other place

If you do not meet all these qualifications, you should not register to vote.

Where To Get Registration Forms

Voter registration forms, may be distributed by anyone who wants to register others to vote. Forms are available from many sources, including:

  • Office of the County Auditor

    Pottawattamie County Courthouse
    227 S 6th St.
    Council Bluffs, IA 51501

  • Office of the Iowa Secretary of State: in person, by mail, or on-line: www.iowavotes.us
  • Public libraries
  • Political party offices

If You Move

If you move within Pottawattamie county where you are registered to vote, you may change your address before the close of registration:

  1. By notifying the county auditor in writing. Include your full name as it appears on the voter registration records, your old and new addresses, and your signature. If more than one person is submitting a change, each person must sign the notice.
  2. By completing a new registration form.
  3. By making the change in person at the county auditor's office or other registration sites.
